Example: 5-day lunch prep
Maria works weekdays and packs lunch. She plans 5 meals: chicken rice bowl, pasta salad, stir-fry, soup, and grain bowl. Each is a medium portion (about 450 ml). She owns 12 glass containers at 500 ml each.
Input
- 5 meals, medium portions
- 12 containers, 500 ml each
Estimate
- 5 portions, ~2250 ml total
- 5 containers needed
- 7 containers spare
Result
Maria has enough containers. She can pack all 5 lunches and still have spares for leftovers or snacks.
How to use this estimator
1. Add your meals
Type a meal name, set how many servings you need this week, and pick a portion size. Small is around 250 ml, medium around 450 ml, large around 700 ml. These are averages. Dense foods like rice or pasta may need less space than you think.
2. Add your containers
Enter the name, capacity in ml, and how many you own. If you are not sure about capacity, check the bottom of the container or measure with a measuring cup. Add more than one type if you use a mix.
3. Read the estimate
The panel on the right updates as you type. It shows total portions, total volume, containers needed, and how many to buy. The packing plan suggests which meals go in which containers to minimize waste.
4. Export or share
Copy the summary to your notes, print it, or share a link. Your plan is saved in the browser so you can come back later on the same device.
Assumptions and limits
- Portion sizes are estimates. Your meals may need more or less space.
- Containers are treated as interchangeable unless you set a type.
- This estimator does not track nutrition, cost, or cooking time.
- Data stays in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting to count snacks or sides. Add them as separate meals.
- Using the container's full capacity. Leave some space for sauces and expansion.
- Not checking if containers are microwave or freezer safe before packing.
- Buying too many of one size. A mix of small, medium, and large is often more useful.
Questions people ask
- Can I save my plan for next week?

- What if I use different container sizes?
- Add multiple container types. The estimator will split meals across them to minimize waste.
- Is this only for lunches?
- No. Use it for any meal: breakfasts, dinners, snacks, or full-day plans.
- How do I know my container size in ml?
- Check the bottom of the container or fill it with water using a measuring cup. Most labels list ml or cups.
- Can I use this on my phone?
- Yes. The layout adjusts to smaller screens and all controls work with touch.
